Time honored meditation techniques
Learning how to meditate on a symbol, an idea or a religious mantra is one of the time-honored meditation techniques for connecting with divine power. To start, you could try this method, which is adapted from one used by Buddhists.
1. Choose a religious image - an Old Master painting of Jesus on the Cross; an icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe; the word Jehovah in Hebrew script; or Allah in Arabic - the possibilities are endless.
2. Sit comfortably in your usual position with the image in front of you.
3. Look carefully at the image. Let it come in and out of focus. Try to keep your gaze still.
4. Now close your eyes and recreate the image in your mind’s eye. Be as detailed as possible.
5. Open your eyes and gaze again.
6. Shut your eyes and recreate. You may want to do this several times. Eventually, keep your eyes shut and contemplate the inner image.
