A surgical technican needs to work quickly and efficiently, as well as carefully and diligently, and they must handle emergencies well on top of being strong enough to witness what they do. A surgical technologist also has tasks like preparing and disinfecting the operating room, transporting patients to and from the room, handing tools to the surgeon, retracting tissues and stitching wounds. Some surgeries are difficult and take a while, so a technician must have the stamina to stand throughout the whole time.
This occupation must complete a two-year certification program from an accredited school. You have many surgical tech programs to choose from, but people with surgical technologist certification are preferred over those without. You can learn theory and practical studies with certified programs. Some of the basic classes include anatomy, how to sterilize, and medical terminology. You can get hands-on surgical technology training by interning with a supervisor. Once you graduate with a certificate, you can expect a higher salary. Specialization in pediatrics, cardiology or orthopedics is also possible, unless you want to simply work an average work week.
